10 Sep 2026 - 11 Sep 2026: LSDS Lab at Energy Data Hackdays: Tackling EKZ’s Cloud-Scale Flexibility Challenge

Our researcher Mohsen Salimi represented our research group at the Energy Data Hackdays in Brugg-Windisch, working directly on the industry challenge:

“Customer Flexibility Intelligence for the Energy Transition”, presented by EKZ (Elektrizitätswerke des Kantons Zürich).

The challenge focused on building a scalable, end-to-end intelligence framework to unlock demand-side flexibility across low-voltage distribution grids using enterprise cloud and data-science technologies:

  • Cloud-Native Data Ingestion & Pipelines: Harnessing Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure to process, store, and orchestrate large volumes of smart meter telemetry and time-series consumption data efficiently and securely.
  • Flexibility Detection & Load Profiling: Designing machine learning workflows to extract and profile flexible, shiftable consumption patterns (such as EV charging routines, heat pumps, and home storage systems) from granular metering streams.
  • Predictive Analytics & Grid Optimization: Developing analytical models to forecast customer responsiveness and quantify available upward and downward flexibility reserves for real-time grid stabilization and local congestion management.
